You’d have to go a long way to find a more Deadhead-friendly place on Earth than Boulder, Colorado. A university town that has always been a magnet for artists, spiritual seekers and a variety of bohemian types, Boulder’s downtown pedestrian mall on any given day can remind one of a hippie version of Disneyland’s Main Street – a feeling that’s only magnified when the population is temporarily magnified by the influx of people coming to town for a show by any of the musical offspring of the Grateful Dead. Indeed, a stop in Boulder has become a cherished tradition for Dead & Company, with the band playing multi-day stands on each of its four summer tours to date at Folsom Field, home of the University of Colorado’s football team. The music heard here, from the band’s second visit to the stadium, should tell you all you need to know about why Dead and Co. and Boulder are such a perfect match. From the surefire opening of “Truckin’” to the equally crowd-pleasing encore of “One More Saturday Night,” the band delivers two powerful and wide-ranging sets, creating a heady mix with such favorite rockers as “Bertha,” “Turn On Your Lovelight,” and “China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider,” rootsy tunes like “Ramble On Rose,” “Friend Of The Devil” and “Brown-Eyed Women,” poignant songs including “Loser” “China Doll” and “Stella Blue,” and, of course, plenty of exploratory stretching out in “Help On The Way>Slipknot!>Franklin’s Tower,” “Dark Star” and the Drums and Space segments.
